Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Midelt – Ziz Gorges – Erfoud – Rissani – Merzouga
Following a pick-up from your hotel or riad in Fes at 8 am, we will depart for our picturesque journey over the Moyen Atlas towards Ifrane, through hills covered in forests of cork oak and giant cedar, home of a few Barbary apes. Crossing beautiful and tranquil passes over both the Middle and High Atlas ranges we will catch a first glimpse of the south’s incredible architecture. Lunch in Midelt, approached through a bleak plain of scrub and desert. The dramatic peaks of the High Atlas, rising behind the town, provide a spectacular background. Crossing Tizi-n-Talremt (Pass of the She-Camel), we will descend into a desert plain along the Ziz valley. We will then head south to Erfoud and Rissani, a huge oasis containing over six million palm trees, edged by many ksours (fortified villages). Continuing along a striking route that marks the transition to desert, we will travel to your amazing Kasbah hotel at edge of the golden sand dunes, relax beside the swimming pool, at night you will meet a desert blues band live show.(HB)
Day 2: Merzouga Culture and traditions (Meet the locals and interact with them) – Tea with Nomads – African spiritual music – Fossilized animals.. (4WD Tour around the Erg Chebbi – in the afternoon we will ride the camels into the desert, Overnight in Erg Chebbi Sahara dunes.
After breakfast, we go in 4 WD off-road tour around the dunes via the oasis of Merzouga, the nomadic depository, Khamlia village to visit the Gnawa Black people’s village, originally slaves brought from black africa, to listen to their spiritual music, then continue to meet desert nomads in their tents, and discover a new sense of life. Not far away there’s the lake of Merzouga, with its bird populations, you’ll leave for Rissani. Once called Sijilmassa, this was the meeting place for the salt caravans, coming from Timbuktu in Mali. Here you’ll walk through the souk, selling spices, vegetables and cloths. After a lunch pizza in Rissani you will travel back to your amazing Kasbah hotel at edge of the golden sand dunes, relax beside the swimming pool. Here all unnecessary luggages can be left in safe rooms at the hotel. The one hour and a half camel trek will take us to a Berber camp in the middle of the Erg Chebbi sand dunes, some rising of 820 feet), the highest in North Africa. The camp consists of three comfortable Berber tents equipped with mattresses, linen, toilets, a restaurant, and a kitchen. The evening will consist shooting stars show, then dinner followed by a traditional music show and overnight in a nomad camp in tents. (HB)
Day 3: Merzouga – Tourug – Tinjdad – Todra Gorges – Dades valley and gorge
Wake up early to enjoy spectaclar sunrise over the dunes, when the colour of the dunes combine with the play of shadows to make an awesome sight. After breakfast we ride the camels for a couple of hours (or less; it is up to you) before leaving for Tinghir and Todra Gorges for lunch. The road passes through Tinejdad and the Todra Valley. This stunning area affords plenty of opportunities to walk, such as along the river through the gardens or up the road on the other side of the gorge. Later, we will continue to the Dades Valley and the Dades Gorges before spending the night in a hotel. (HB)
Day 4: Dades Valley – Boutarar – Rose Valley – Skoura – Ouarzazate
After breakfast there is some time to relax on the hotel terrace, with wonderful views across the fertile Dades Valley. Alternatively, we offer an optional 1-2 hour trek through the villages of this charming area, passing fields cultivated by the Berber women, with the peaks of the High Atlas as a fitting backdrop. Our journey will then continue toward Ouarzazate, going off-road along the Boutarar piste to visit Berber nomads in their caves and partake in a glass of tea with them. From here, we will continue through the Valley of the Roses, famous for its Rose Festival in May, and past the kasbahs of Skoura. We will stay in a riad in Ouarzazate. (HB)
Day 5: Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou – Atlas mountains – Marrakech
After breakfast, our route continues to Kasbah Ait Benhaddou, a World Heritage site and the backdrop to many Hollywood blockbusters. This is the most famous kasbah in Morocco. From here, a newly asphalted road continues to Telouet. Telouet is set right in the midst of the mountains, and was once the seat of the last Pasha of Marrakech, El Glaoui, from where the highest pass in Africa, Tizi n’Tichka, was controlled. At the end of the afternoon we will arrive in Marrakech.
