Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech.
Upon arrival at Marrakech airport you’ll be met and transferred to our hotel in the center of town. This evening there will be a welcome meeting and dinner at 18:00hrs, after which you’re free to explore the delights of Djemaa el Fna, the exuberant market place, which literally comes alive at night. Day 2: Marrakech – Casablanca – Rabat.
Today we travel to Rabat, stopping en route to visit Casablanca and the see the exterior of Hassan 2 Mosque, which has the tallest minaret and is the third largest mosque in the world – it can hold 25,000 worshippers at any one time.There is an optional visit inside the mosque for those who would like to explore further. Continuing on, we spend the afternoon and evening in Morocco’s capital city Rabat and visit some of the highlights of Rabat, including the impressive Chellah – a necropolis and complex of ancient, medieval ruins. Day 3: Rabat – Meknes – Volubilis – Fes.
Travelling on to Fes today, we stop at the Imperial City of Meknes, which became known as the Versailles of Morocco due to its impressive buildings and elaborate monuments. After free time to explore the city we continue on to tour the incredible UNESCO listed Roman ruins of Volubilis, which date back to AD40. Reaching the Imperial City of Fes late this afternoon the evening is free for you to relax or explore. Overnight in Fes. (BB)
Day 4: Fes sightseeing.
Fes is the oldest and largest medieval city in the world and its medina is a cacophony of aromas, sights and sounds. Today we enjoy a guided tour of Fes el Bali – the old walled city and visit the dye-pits, tanneries before returning to our hotel to prepare for an optional night of Moroccan entertainment and food at a restaurant in town. Day 5: Fes – Midelt – Ziz Gorges Erfoud – Erg Chebbi – Camel trek in the Sahara.
After breakfast we will embark on a picturesque journey towards Ifrane, through hills covered in forests of cork oak and giant cedar, home of a few Barbary apes. Crossing beautiful and tranquil passes over both the Middle and High Atlas ranges we will catch a first glimpse of the south’s incredible architecture. Lunch in Midelt, approached through a bleak plain of scrub and desert. The dramatic peaks of the High Atlas, rising behind the town, provide a spectacular background. Crossing Tizi-n-Talremt (Pass of the She-Camel), we will descend into a desert plain along the Ziz valley. We will then head south to Erfoud and Rissani, a huge oasis containing over six million palm trees, edged by many ksours (fortified villages). Continuing along a striking route that marks the transition to desert, when we reach Merzouga we will be greeted with a glass of tea. We have time to relax, then we get ready to ride camels into the pink sands of Morocco’s highest dunes. We will have time to wander the dunes before sunset. Dinner is served, followed by traditional music and the night in a nomad tent. (HB)
Day 6: Merzouga – Ziz oases – Rissani – Todra Gorge – Dades valley.
If we wake up early enough, we can watch the spectacle of sunrise, when the colour of the dunes combine with the play of shadows to make an awesome sight. After cup of tea, we ride the camels for a couple of hours (or less; it is up to you), in the Kasbah, you will have breakfast and shower, before leaving to the fortified village of Rissani in the Tafilalt region. Nestled at the edge of the Ziz Valley, Rissani is a traditional desert village yet houses the impressive Mausoleum of Moulay Ali Sharif, the first ruler of the Alawite dynasty, which thrived here in the 17th century. Journey through the impressive Todra Gorges and past the eastern slopes of the Atlas Mountains to Tinerhir Oasis, with its green valley of palms and local villages, before continuing on a scenic drive through the Dades Valley, also known as the ‘Valley of 1000 Kasbahs. Overnight in Dades valley. (HB)
Day 7: Dades valley – Skoura – Ouarzazate – Ait Benhaddou – Atlas mountains – Marrakech.
After breakfast, we will drive through the villages of this charming area, passing fields cultivated by the Berber women, with the peaks of the High Atlas as a fitting backdrop. Our journey will then continue toward Ouarzazate, along the Valley of the Roses, famous for its Rose Festival in May, and past the Kasbahs of Skoura oasis. A charming oasis resort with an exotic Kasbah, Ouarzazate, has been featured in several films including ‘The Sheltering Sky’, we stop for a visit to Taorirt Kasbah, and the cinematographic museum, we head on explore Ait Benhaddou, an incredible ancient fortified kasbah which has featured in many a blockbuster movie, including Gladiator and Laurence of Arabia. Later, continue through picturesque villages and rugged mountain scenery to the 7,414 foot high Tizi-n-Tichkas Pass, in the heart of the High Atlas Mountains, before arriving in the imperial city of Marrakech, for two nights. An optional evening excursion will be a fitting choice to end the day Overnight in Marrakech. (BB)
Day 8: Marrakech sightseeing.
We take a guided tour and see the sights of Marrakech, Morocco’s fourth Imperial City. Inside the rose coloured medina walls is a tangle of winding streets and alleys that open onto verdant gardens and bustling souks. At the heart of the medina is Djemaa El Fna, the city’s exuberant market place and towering over it, is the famous Koutoubia Mosque, the tallest building in the city. The rest of the day is free to explore the city. Overnight in Marrakech. (BB)
Day 9: Marrakech at leisure – Transfer to airport
Our Moroccan adventure ends after breakfast and hotel check out, Transfer to Airport.
